Rodrygo has recorded just 3 starts, 2 assists, and only 359 minutes of play with Real Madrid this season (2025-2026). Recently benched following Xabi Alonso’s arrival in Spain, the Brazilian international (37 caps, 9 goals) took advantage of the international break to reconnect with his former coach, Carlo Ancelotti, and gain some valuable playing time.
Last Saturday, Rodrygo started and assisted in a match against Senegal, and once again featured in the Brazilian lineup against Tunisia. He was enthusiastic and engaged with his teammates, but struggled to find success in front of goal. Standing at 1.74m, Rodrygo delivered a performance that was described as “mixed.” Like Vinicius Jr., he faced tough comparisons with young talent Estêvão, leading to a disappointing 1-1 draw for his team. After the game, the Brazilian took time to speak with the media.
This was an opportunity for him to commend the coach since taking over the Brazilian national team. “I can only speak positively about my time under Ancelotti. It’s uplifting to see how the team has improved. Now that we have a clear idea of how to play and defend, it makes a significant difference,” he expressed in the mixed zone. The number 11 for Real Madrid didn’t stop there.
When asked about his limited playing time at Madrid while facing a flurry of questions from Brazilian journalists in the corridors of Pierre-Mauroy, Rodrygo responded, “There’s not much I can do regarding my opportunities at Real compared to the national team.” He added, “I need to keep working hard, invest my effort, and try to win the trust of the coach there (Xabi Alonso), just like I have with the coach here (Carlo Ancelotti). I believe it’s only through training that I can improve. If he (Xabi Alonso) sees my dedication, who knows, I might get more chances.” The message is clear. Now, it’s up to Xabi Alonso to respond.
