Liam Rosenior has backed Cole Palmer, stating the midfielder usually converts late chances against Leeds ‘999 times out of 1000.’
Palmer missed a key opportunity during the match at Stamford Bridge, failing to score with an open goal. This miss cost Chelsea three points after they had previously let a two-goal lead slip.
Joao Pedro had opened the scoring for Chelsea with a goal from Palmer’s assist, and then Palmer added another from the penalty spot.
Leeds pulled one back with a penalty from Lukas Nmecha. They later equalized due to some defensive mistakes by Chelsea, with Noah Okafor scoring amidst chaos in the penalty area.
As Chelsea sought a winning goal, Pedro’s header went just over the bar, but then Palmer missed another good opportunity. In stoppage time, he failed to score from within the six-yard box, turning a cross from Caicedo over the bar. This chance had an expected goals (xG) value of 0.91.
Rosenior defended Palmer, mentioning that Chelsea were penalized for not finishing the game earlier.
“He scores 999 times out of 1000, it was just that one moment,” he said during the post-match press conference.
“We shouldn’t have been in that position. The game should have been wrapped up at 2-0. I need to show the players some things to prevent this from happening again.”
