Kobbie Mainoo has faced challenges in securing playing time under Ruben Amorim, despite having been seen as a key player for the future just a year and a half ago.

The United midfielder excelled under Erik ten Hag, scoring in the 2023 FA Cup Final against Manchester City and receiving nominations for the Golden Boy award.

His performance also earned him calls to the England squad, playing an important role for Gareth Southgate during Euro 2024.

However, with Ruben Amorim’s arrival, Mainoo has seen a reduction in his playing time and even asked to leave the club for more opportunities.

This summer, he requested a transfer, but it was denied.

A similar request seemed likely for January, with Napoli expressing interest before recently pulling back.

Nevertheless, Amorim has now suggested that Mainoo might have a chance to play at Old Trafford once he recovers from injury.

The midfielder missed the match against Aston Villa due to a calf injury and is currently still sidelined.

In Amorim’s pre-match press conference before the Newcastle United game, he spoke about Mainoo’s injury and also mentioned Bruno Fernandes.

On their recovery timelines, Amorim said: “They are recovering. I don’t think it will take long. I think Kobbie [Mainoo] will return faster than Bruno [Fernandes].”

With Mainoo expected to return before Fernandes, he may have the opportunity to fill in for the captain during his absence.

Though it may not lead to many matches, it allows Mainoo to demonstrate his commitment to the squad and fight for his place amid strong competition.

Amorim has often pointed out that Mainoo is competing with Fernandes for a spot on the team, and competing with the club captain can limit opportunities.

It remains to be seen what unfolds when Mainoo comes back from injury in the upcoming weeks.
