Almost three months have passed since Ruben Amorim stepped down as head coach of Manchester United, with former midfielder Michael Carrick taking over temporarily.

Amorim joined from Sporting CP in November 2024, known for his modern approach and preference for a three-at-the-back setup.

Initially, his arrival brought enthusiasm, marking a shift from Erik ten Hag’s tenure, and many hoped he would restore the club’s former success.

However, things did not go as planned. He led the team to their lowest-ever Premier League finish, placing 15th last season.

Additionally, he lost the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in May 2025, leaving a mark on his 14-month management.

Ultimately, Amorim became another manager who couldn’t reach the heights set by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Since leaving, he has not secured a new job and has been taking a break from football.

Reports in February suggested he might return, with Brazilian club Vasco de Gama interested in hiring him.

Despite this, Amorim seems in no hurry to re-enter the challenging world of football management.

His severance package from Manchester United was over £10 million, allowing him some time away from the sport.

Recently, the 41-year-old was seen playing padel in Lisbon with a familiar face — Hugo Viana, who works as the sporting director at Manchester City.

They have a strong friendship, dating back to their time at Sporting CP.

The Padel Expo club shared a photo of them together on Instagram, humorously suggesting they had reached out to him for coaching opportunities.

Despite their connections to rival Manchester clubs, their friendship remains strong from their past at Sporting CP and Braga.

In the picture, Amorim appears relaxed and happy, surrounded by club regular Goncalo Olveira and Viana.

Their meeting has stirred talk about Amorim’s potential return to management.

While Pep Guardiola’s future at Manchester City is uncertain, it seems unlikely that City would hire Amorim again.

Though Viana endorsed Amorim at Sporting, it’s improbable he will do so in Manchester.
