Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has managed to keep his position this season by reversing a series of poor results. However, with the team currently sitting in seventh place, there’s still much to be done for the Portuguese coach to prove he has improved the situation at Old Trafford.

Following significant summer investments and changes to the attacking lineup with new players like Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo, Manchester United aims to be among the top four for Champions League qualification soon.

While Amorim has made progress, there are calls for further improvement, particularly regarding his decision to keep young England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo on the bench. Many believe he deserves a starting position, and his absence has sparked transfer rumors ahead of the January 2026 window, with Serie A champions Napoli reportedly interested in him.

During a press conference before the critical Boxing Day match against Newcastle United, Amorim acknowledged Mainoo’s potential and encouraged the young player to remain patient, highlighting that losing him would be detrimental to the team’s midfield during the January transfer window.

Amorim stated, “Kobbie Mainoo will be the future of Manchester United. He just needs to wait for his chance; things can change quickly in football. If we’re not bringing in anyone, it’s difficult to let him go. We are short on options.”

It’s evident that Manchester United lacks depth in midfield. Besides Bruno Fernandes, there are no standout players, and Casemiro’s importance remains clear, yet Mainoo’s role is puzzlingly limited. Recent signings like Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount have not lived up to expectations.

Given that Manchester United’s top midfield targets—Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, and Elliot Anderson—are unlikely to be available in January, retaining Mainoo is crucial. Amorim should not only talk about Mainoo’s future but should start him in matches moving forward.
