In 2020, Ruben Neves expressed his admiration for Manchester United.

Rúben Neves mentioned the attractiveness of Manchester United even before rumors of a transfer to Old Trafford began. As United considers signing the Al-Hilal midfielder due to injuries to Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, his earlier remarks seem very relevant.

Reports from United In Focus and The Times indicate that United sees the 28-year-old as a valuable addition to their midfield. With Neves approaching the end of his contract in Saudi Arabia, a transfer now could benefit everyone, especially a player looking to make a mark on a bigger stage.

Neves described United as “a great club in a great league”

Neves and Fernandes have played together for the Portugal national team, and Neves was present when Fernandes made his Manchester United debut during a 0–0 match against Wolves at Old Trafford in January 2020.

Fernandes made an impression that day, receiving a warm welcome from fans. Reflecting on that moment, Neves’s comments now suit his current situation.

“I’m really happy for him, he’s in a great club in a great league,” Neves said.
“Now he can show everyone what he can do. That is a lot, he’s a great player.”

Now, six years later, Neves might be facing a similar chance. A return to the Premier League could bring him back into the global spotlight, allowing him to connect with Fernandes ahead of the next World Cup. Although Neves is a regular in the Portugal squad, he played only 17 minutes in their recent 9–1 victory over Armenia, highlighting that his spot is not guaranteed.

Unfinished business at the highest level

Neves has shown consistent performance over the years. He has completed five consecutive Premier League seasons with over 30 appearances each year. In Saudi Arabia, he helped Al-Hilal secure a league title and contributed to Manchester City‘s elimination from the Club World Cup.

Yet, at 28, he may feel there is more to achieve. Joining a Premier League contender would give Neves the chance to prove he is competing at a top level and to thrive in the environment he has long admired.

If Neves pursues this path, he would be acting on the beliefs he shared years ago.
