Matvey Safonov, currently on the bench at Paris Saint-Germain with no matches played this season, experienced a mixed international break with the Russian national team. Media in Russia are suggesting that he consider leaving Paris to find more playing time elsewhere. However, the goalkeeping coach of the national team, Vitaly Kafanov, shared some insights with local media Sport Mail.
“If we talk about Matvey, his season has started, but PSG has chosen to go with another goalkeeper. When it’s his turn, he will accept the position. He just needs to be given the opportunity and we should expect some mistakes. Regarding the national team, we will support him in this situation and will not hesitate to select him, even if he hasn’t played yet. In Russia, there are very few goalkeepers in European clubs,” Kafanov said. He also mentioned that Safonov has confided in him about his situation at PSG. “He is doing well; he is waiting for his chance. He will get it,” he added, responding to a journalist’s question about whether the player is considering leaving Paris this winter. “As far as I know, no one is thinking about that, neither at the club nor Matvey himself,” he confirmed.
