L’Olympique de Marseille has reasons to be frustrated. Leading in the first half and rarely troubled by Sporting Portugal, the Phocaeans ended up losing 2-1. This was largely due to the expulsion of Emerson and some questioned coaching decisions by Roberto De Zerbi. Former player Samir Nasri believes that the Marseille coach played it too safe by making defensive substitutions at halftime.
“The guy (Emerson) was in the middle of the action, just trying to earn a penalty. The first yellow card was harsh. I agree with Aubameyang because it changed the game’s dynamics. Marseille no longer looked the same. The referee wasn’t the only reason for their loss. De Zerbi’s substitutions lacked courage in the second half; he was too cautious,” he mentioned on Canal+.
