The Africa Cup of Nations is set to kick off in less than ten days, and teams are gradually revealing their rosters for the continental tournament. Following Morocco, Senegal has now unveiled its squad. Head coach Pape Thiaw announced his list of 28 players this Saturday afternoon. The anticipation was high, given Senegal’s rich talent pool, and there were bound to be a few surprises.
In recent weeks, some players faced fitness issues, raising concerns among Senegalese fans. Notably, Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra, and Assane Diao had been struggling with injuries. While some key players were secure in their spots, several positions remained uncertain, particularly in the forward line where there were multiple contenders for the number 9 role, including Boulaye Dia, Nicolas Jackson, Habib Diallo, and Chérif Ndiaye. Ultimately, Pape Thiaw opted for a more inclusive approach this Saturday.
Highly Competitive Squad
The Senegalese coach decided to include all four main strikers in his 28-player list. Among the attacking players are Sadio Mané and PSG’s Ibrahim Mbaye. Former Marseille player Iliman Ndiaye and returning injury victim Ismaila Sarr also made the cut. Additionally, Assane Diao, who was wanted by Fabregas, is included. As expected, Pape Thiaw has chosen to leave out Abdou Diallo from the central defense.
Defender Moussa Niakhaté from OL is part of the lineup, along with Nice’s Yehvann Diouf in goal and Antoine Mendy in defense. The squad features several familiar faces from Ligue 1, including Lamine Camara and Krépin Diatta from Monaco, Strasbourg’s Mamadou Sarr, and Metz’s Cheikh Sabaly. This competitive squad arrives at the AFCON as a favorite, making it hard to find another team with such quality. Supporters are hoping for a second star.
