Serie A Responds to EU Official Amid AC Milan’s Australia Fixture Controversy

Serie A in Italy has called the criticism from a European Union Commissioner regarding their decision to hold a regular season match between AC Milan and Como in Australia early next year as “excessive.”

In June, the Italian football federation (FIGC) approved Serie A’s plan to stage the game in Perth next February, while Milan’s San Siro stadium hosts the Winter Olympics. However, approvals from UEFA and FIFA are still pending.

Additionally, Spanish teams Villarreal and Barcelona have suggested playing a La Liga match in Miami in December. EU Sports Commissioner Glenn Micallef labeled these proposals as a “betrayal of the fans.”

“I’m deeply disappointed by proposals to hold domestic league matches outside Europe,” Micallef expressed on social media.

“European competitions must take place in Europe. Clubs owe their success to loyal fans and communities; moving games abroad isn’t innovation, it’s betrayal.”

In response, Serie A stated they were “astonished” by Micallef’s comments, asserting that he underestimated the importance of initiatives promoting Italian football globally.

“Describing this single match as betrayal among 380 Serie A matches seems excessive, risking a populist debate,” the statement read.

“Taking a match abroad does not equate to exporting the championship, but rather introduces new audiences to the excellence of Italian football.”

“This small sacrifice for Milan and Como fans will enhance visibility and popularity worldwide.”
