Benjamin Sesko’s two goals don’t fix all of Manchester United’s concerns, and he’s not being labeled as a top player just yet. However, the storyline surrounding him hasn’t been positive.
While he has missed several chances lately, this is already an improvement compared to last season when he struggled to get into goal-scoring positions consistently.
His movement and anticipation have always been sharp. It appears that his scoring struggles were more about confidence than skill.
Now that he has scored twice, there’s hope for more goals to come. Even if they don’t arrive right away, his display against Burnley showed a noticeable difference compared to Rasmus Hojlund’s time at the club.
Sesko had seven shots on target from eight attempts against Burnley, which resulted in an expected goals figure of 1.14.
This performance stands out. In contrast, Hojlund had a total of just 13 shots on target last season, making Sesko’s single-game performance quite impressive, as he achieved more than half of Hojlund’s total in one match.
The performance gap between Hojlund and Sesko is becoming evident as they both start their journeys at Manchester United this season.
Sesko’s skills make him a valuable player
Sesko’s effort against Burnley went beyond his two goals. His movement and energy significantly influenced the game even before he scored.
His instincts in the box, timing of runs, and positional awareness are noteworthy for a player still adapting to this level of competition.
Though his finishing isn’t fully developed yet, that’s likely to improve as he gains confidence and playing time.
Currently, he contributes much more than Hojlund did towards the end of his tenure at United when Hojlund seemed to be just filling space on the field.
Even when Sesko isn’t scoring, he creates trouble for defenders and offers an option for teammates. This lays a solid foundation for his ongoing development.
