Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to support Michael Carrick from the stands if he becomes interim head coach, following the club’s pattern of selecting familiar figures.
This decision comes after Darren Fletcher’s brief time in charge, with both men having strong ties to Old Trafford. Carrick and Fletcher have a combined 25 years as players at United.
Carrick wants to include Fletcher in his coaching team if he takes over. Fletcher has already gotten Ferguson’s approval for the interim role, and Carrick has previously mentioned the guidance he has received from the legendary manager.

If appointed, Carrick would be stepping in for the second time as United’s interim head coach, having previously taken over after Ole Gunnar Solskjær was let go in 2021.
After leaving United, Carrick managed Middlesbrough and has kept in close contact with Ferguson, valuing the advice he received.
“I spoke to Sir Alex several times, especially after my playing days. I preferred not to bother him while I was still a player,” Carrick shared.
“He truly cares about ex-players becoming coaches and managers, and has been supportive of my journey. His influence greatly shaped my understanding of football and life.”

Bruno Fernandes, the captain, praised Carrick’s coaching during his first term in 2021, and Cristiano Ronaldo has also expressed his support for Carrick.
Carrick’s time at Middlesbrough has added to his experience, and he acknowledges that his management style differs from Ferguson’s.
