Sir Jim Ratcliffe began his involvement with Manchester United in February 2024 by acquiring a 27.7% stake from the Glazer family, which allowed him to take control of football operations at the club.

This investment is part of a larger deal worth about £1.25 billion, marking a significant change at Old Trafford since the Glazers took over in 2005.

Under Ratcliffe’s leadership, United has seen a major reset, leading to shifts in executive roles, recruitment strategies, and long-term infrastructure plans.

The INEOS-led approach focuses on financial responsibility, sustainable team building, and managing player wages, moving away from the previous high-spending strategies.

Since Ratcliffe’s involvement, United has spent over £200 million on player transfers, with an emphasis on younger players with potential resale value and efficient contracts.

Cost-control measures from INEOS have also led to operational restructuring and staff layoffs, receiving mixed reactions from supporters.

Manchester United is a key part of Ratcliffe’s sports investments, but he also owns other major assets.

Through INEOS, Ratcliffe has ownership in OGC Nice in Ligue 1, the INEOS Grenadiers cycling team, and INEOS Britannia in the America’s Cup.

Additionally, INEOS has a significant stake in Mercedes-AMG Formula One, broadening Ratcliffe’s influence in top-tier sports.

According to Football Insider, Ratcliffe’s increasing obligations may limit his direct involvement with Manchester United in the near future.

Currently, he faces financial challenges at INEOS, the petrochemical company he founded, which reportedly has over £18 billion in debt.

As chairman and CEO of INEOS, Ratcliffe attributes these challenges to rising global energy prices and trade tariffs from former U.S. President Donald Trump.

While he may need to spend more time addressing INEOS’ issues, there are no immediate concerns regarding the finances or daily operations of Manchester United.

Earlier this year, Ratcliffe increased his stake in United to 28.9%, investing around £240 million into the club.
