Arne Slot has emphasized the need for Liverpool to improve both offensively and defensively following a disappointing draw with Tottenham at Anfield.
The match ended in a last-minute equalizer, thwarting Liverpool’s chances for Champions League qualification. After Dominik Szoboszlai scored from a free-kick, Liverpool was unable to convert additional opportunities, allowing Spurs to equalize late in the game through Richarlison.
Despite this draw moving Liverpool into fifth place, the outcome was met with dissatisfaction from fans in attendance at full-time.
After winning the title last season, Liverpool is now facing stiff competition for Champions League spots and missed the chance to take advantage of losses by Aston Villa and Chelsea.
In the post-match press conference, Slot addressed the challenges his team faces, stating that Liverpool must enhance their performance in both penalty areas.
“It’s certainly damaging, but we’ve experienced similar setbacks before. We’re not helping ourselves,” he said.
“This season, we often create more chances or higher expected goals but struggle to convert them. While many teams in the Premier League exceed their expected goals, we are not among them for most of the season.”
“This leads to tight matches, and we have difficulty keeping clean sheets. We haven’t secured as many clean sheets as we would like if we intend to climb the standings. This combination hinders our ability to gather the points we need.”
