Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was released by Manchester United in 2021, has been invited back to the club. This makes him the first manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to receive such an opportunity.
This move came from the Glazers, rather than Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who only became co-owner of the club in early 2024.
According to Andy Mitten, Solskjaer did not reach out to the club regarding the interim role. Instead, Manchester United contacted him.
Solskjaer also spoke positively about the other candidates for the interim position. In addition to Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy have been mentioned as potential options.
Mitten shared on the YouTube channel United We Stand: “There are many inaccurate reports out there. People are writing based on assumptions without knowing the facts.
“The fact is that United has spoken to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick, and Ruud van Nistelrooy. No decision has been made yet.”
“Some are saying ‘Ole offered himself,’ but that is not true. Manchester United reached out to him. I know when it happened, and Ole also had nice things to say about the other candidates,” he added.
“I would like to see some combination of them. Ole, Michael, and Ruud are all good friends.”
Comparing Solskjaer, Carrick, and Van Nistelrooy
Each of the three candidates has been caretaker managers before, but only Solskjaer was appointed permanently.
During his time as interim manager, Solskjaer achieved a win rate of 47%, with a record of 14 wins, two draws, and only three losses in 19 matches.
Carrick took charge after Solskjaer’s departure and managed three matches, winning two and drawing one against Chelsea.
Van Nistelrooy stepped in following Erik ten Hag’s exit and led United to three wins and a draw in his four games.
