Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 1–1 draw by Newcastle United in a friendly at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea on Sunday night (3 August 2025). It was an emotional match for Son Heung-min, who was playing his final game with the London club.
The South Korean player captained the team and started the match. He was substituted in the 65^(th) minute, being replaced by Mohammed Kudus.
There was a tearful atmosphere in the stadium as Son left the pitch, greeted by thunderous applause from the entire crowd and his teammates. He appeared to be holding back tears as he waved goodbye to the home fans.
The match was intense from the outset. Tottenham took the lead in the fourth minute when Brennan Johnson scored with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area.
However, their lead was short-lived. Newcastle equalised through Harvey Barnes in the 38^(th) minute. The winger capitalised on a counter-attack, firing a shot at the near post to beat the Spurs goalkeeper.
In the second half, both teams continued to create chances. Tottenham relied on Lucas Bergvall and Mathys Tel to break through the opposing defence, while Newcastle relied on Anthony Gordon’s pace, Jacob Murphy’s speed and Bruno Guimaraes’ creativity.
Unfortunately, there were no further goals until the final whistle. The match ended 1–1, marking the emotional end of Son’s Tottenham career in his homeland.
