Sounders’ Obed Vargas Aims for European Opportunity Instead of Liga MX Move

Seattle Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas has stated he is looking to play in Europe once his contract ends and is not considering a move to Liga MX at this moment.

“They reached out, but my priority is going to Europe,” Vargas told ESPN. “My contract with the Sounders expires at the end of this year, so if (a move to Europe) doesn’t happen before that, then the plan is to pursue it at the end of the year.”

At 20 years old, Vargas made his debut for the Sounders in 2021. He has scored four goals and provided 12 assists in 92 appearances in Major League Soccer over the past five years. He played an important role in the Sounders’ victories in the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League and the 2025 Leagues Cup.

The Anchorage, Alaska native holds dual citizenship and has been called up to the Mexican national team, most recently as a substitute in a friendly against Uruguay. After representing the United States U20 team in 2022 and U23 team in 2023, Vargas switched to the Mexico U20 team in 2024 and received his first national team call-up that year.

Vargas is now focused on earning a place on Mexico’s roster for the 2026 World Cup.

“The November camp was very good for me. I had a strong performance. I got my name more into consideration,” Vargas mentioned to ESPN. “Each time I get called up, it’s beneficial. I got 30 minutes on the field this time, so my next goal is to play at least 45 minutes to solidify my position. After that, we’ll see.”

“Whenever I’ve been in a camp, the coaches remind us that we’re here for a reason. There are only a limited number of spots, so if you’re here, you have a chance to make the World Cup squad. They encourage us to stay healthy, fit, and active, which gives us the best opportunity. Those are my objectives this year—staying healthy, fit, and playing.”
