Spanish media reports Hansi Flick is set to leave FC Barcelona.

“I love this club and these players. I am very happy here in this city. I will give my best.” This was the statement made by Hans Dieter Flick during a press conference before facing Club Bruges in the UEFA Champions League. Appointed as the head coach of FC Barcelona in summer 2024, succeeding Xavi Hernandez, Flick enjoyed a successful first season. His team secured the La Liga title and won the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de España. In the Champions League, however, they were eliminated in the semi-finals by Inter Milan.

Flick May Depart Sooner Than Expected

Despite a commendable season, the 60-year-old manager was under high expectations for his second year at the helm of the Catalan club. However, things are not going smoothly for Flick, as his team currently sits second in the league, trailing Real Madrid by five points, and they recently lost the Clasico. In the Champions League, they find themselves in 12th place with two wins and one loss against PSG, awaiting their match tonight. Beyond the results, the style of play under Flick has drawn criticism, and the team is also dealing with numerous injuries.

Despite these challenges, the former Bayern Munich manager is working hard to move forward. On Wednesday, ABC dropped a significant revelation. The Spanish media reported that Flick informed his staff last September of his intention to leave at the end of the 2025-26 season. However, he has not yet discussed this with club president Joan Laporta or sporting director Deco, with whom he has good relations. Flick, whose contract runs until 2027, has expressed that he is “very tired” and feels exhausted this season, as shared with his close associates.

The Frustrated German

Flick, who has always stated he wouldn’t stay more than three years, is considering leaving even earlier. According to ABC, his decision is not influenced by the team’s performance. He has shared with his staff that he feels unsupported by the club’s board and is “very frustrated by the attitude of some players,” whom he finds “scattered.” This is not something he encountered at Munich or with the German national team, where he is known for his strict approach. He is particularly exasperated with the lack of commitment from his players and the egos on the team. This includes Lamine Yamal, with whom he generally maintains a good rapport, yet Flick does not understand why the club allows him leniency with his behavior.

According to ABC, Flick was displeased that Yamal was permitted to travel to Milan after the Clasico instead of returning to Barcelona with the team. He is also unhappy with Yamal waiting at the table to be served rather than helping himself during meals or being allowed to drive golf carts reserved for staff at the training center. Additionally, the marketing activities and involvement with Kings League are tiring the player, who has recently been injured. These accumulating issues are causing Flick frustration, as he has to address them repeatedly in press conferences. The coach values discipline, a healthy group dynamic, and fair management—elements he feels are lacking at FC Barcelona, which he is seriously considering leaving if changes are not made, as per ABC. The situation remains tense.
