Steven Gerrard acknowledged he deserved to be let go from Aston Villa in October 2022 due to the team’s poor start to the season.
Gerrard was dismissed after a tough beginning to the 2022/23 season, where the team managed only two wins in 12 matches, leaving them just above the relegation zone due to goal difference.
Aston Villa then brought in Unai Emery, who has since guided the team to impressive success, including qualifying for the Champions League in the 2023/24 season.
This season, Villa is currently in third place in the Premier League and is enjoying a 10-match winning streak across all competitions.
In an interview with Ally McCoist on ‘Ally’s Social Club’ for TNT Sports, Gerrard reflected on where his time at the club went awry.
“We began the season poorly. We lost 2-0 to Bournemouth and didn’t perform well. Tactically, we were lacking, and the players didn’t show up. That was a surprising result.
“We managed to bounce back against Everton with a 1-0 win, which steadied things for a bit. However, after losing again at the end of October, I felt I couldn’t turn it around.
“I sensed a shift in team dynamics; I had upset too many players in the dressing room too soon, and that impacted me significantly. I believe a core group of players distanced themselves from us as a staff.
“Interestingly, none of those players are part of the starting lineup now.”
