Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso explained the team’s loss to Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout.

Sundowns were eliminated from the tournament when Gallants surprised them in a penalty shootout at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

The match ended in a goalless draw after 120 minutes, with Gallants winning 7-6 on penalties, marking a significant upset of the season.

Cardoso stated that Sundowns had full control of the game but noted that football doesn’t always reward the better team.

“We controlled the match completely, with no chances for the other team,” Cardoso said. “We performed well in duels and managed space effectively, but sometimes football doesn’t recognize those who take responsibility.

“Once we got to penalties, it all came down to small details, and those details favored Marumo Gallants,” he added.

Sundowns will next face Remo Stars in Nigeria for the CAF Champions League.
