Coach Eric Chelle faces important selection issues as Nigeria prepares for a vital World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.

The Super Eagles have arrived in Polokwane, South Africa, for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho on Friday. Head coach Eric Chelle and his staff checked in at The Ranch Hotel on Monday, while players flew in from their clubs in Europe and Asia via Johannesburg. Training will start Tuesday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, where Friday’s match will take place.

However, Chelle’s plans have been affected by injuries in the defense. Right-back Felix Agu, expected to step in for the injured Bright Osayi-Samuel, is out due to an ankle injury sustained while playing for Werder Bremen. Scans have shown he will be out for several months. Nigeria’s starting right-back, Ola Aina, is also unavailable until December.

Midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is under medical observation after a disappointing performance for Beşiktaş, where he lost the ball leading to an equalizer in the Istanbul derby.

Despite these defensive challenges, Nigeria’s attack is performing well. Victor Osimhen appears fit after his injury and scored the winner against Liverpool in the Champions League. Akor Adams also impressed in Spain, scoring Sevilla’s fourth goal in a 4-1 victory over Barcelona, assisted by Chidera Ejuke.

Chelle’s other significant worry is player discipline. At least 11 players, including Ajayi, Bassey, Ndidi, Iwobi, and Lookman, are one yellow card away from suspension, which could impact their availability for the crucial final group match against the Benin Republic in Uyo.

Nigeria is currently in third place in Group C with 11 points, three points behind Benin and South Africa. Their chances for qualification improved after CAF annulled South Africa’s 2-0 win over Lesotho due to an ineligible player.
