Swiss Prosecutors Wrap Up 10-Year FIFA Case Against Blatter and Platini

Swiss federal prosecutors have concluded their case against former FIFA president Sepp Blatter and former UEFA president Michel Platini after 10 years, marking the end of two trials and resulting in their acquittals.

Switzerland’s attorney general announced there would be no appeal against the acquittals given in March by an appeal court.

The initial trial occurred in 2022, with charges including fraud, forgery, mismanagement, and misappropriation of over $2 million of FIFA funds dating back to 2011.

The controversial payment to Platini was uncovered in 2015 during ongoing investigations into international football officials by authorities in the U.S. and Switzerland.

Despite the serious allegations, both men were acquitted in Swiss courts twice, leading to their removal from office and the subsequent elections in 2016, which saw Gianni Infantino become FIFA president and Aleksander Ceferin as UEFA president.

On Thursday, Swiss prosecutors stated that accepting the appeal court’s rulings “closes another chapter in the complex procedures related to football.”
