Tagliafico Reflects on Messi’s Future, Argentina’s Next Generation and His Own Path
World Cup winner and Lyon fullback Nicolás Tagliafico discussed Argentina’s current and future prospects in an interview with DSports Radio’s “No Veo La Hora”. He talked about Lionel Messi’s influence, the challenge of moving on without him, and his outlook with the national team.
With Messi suggesting that the next World Cup qualifier in Argentina might be his last, Tagliafico remarked: “If he believes it could be the last qualifier, we just have to enjoy it like every game we’ve played together.” He added: “At this time, it’s about enjoying each day. If it is the last, let it end on a positive note.”
The former Banfield and Independiente player acknowledged that playing without Messi will be a significant challenge. “It’s not easy to say ‘we’ve adapted without Leo.’ A player like him is very hard to replace,” he stated. He emphasized the team’s collective strength: “This group adapts to various situations, environments, and opponents. That adaptability makes it strong, allowing for great achievements.”
Discussing the future without Messi, Tagliafico was straightforward: “That absence will not be easily filled. Leo means so much to us. He is one of the greatest players in football history.” However, he recognized the responsibility of younger players: “This new generation will need to take on the pressure of being future leaders. It’s good that others will have the chance to rise.”
Reflecting on his own career with the national team, he maintained perspective. “Wearing the Argentina shirt is always special. I’ll give my best when I’m with the national team. After next year’s major tournaments, I’ll assess my physical and mental state,” Tagliafico concluded.
