The Curious Buzz Surrounding Mykhaïlo Mudryk’s Potential Move to Strasbourg…

Ukrainian football talent Mykhaïlo Mudryk (24) is facing a significant halt in his career. The left winger, who rose to prominence at Shakhtar Donetsk, joined Chelsea in January 2023 for €70 million, potentially rising to €100 million with bonuses. However, his time with the Blues has been underwhelming, with only 10 goals and 11 assists in 73 matches. Mudryk’s situation worsened a year ago. His last match was on November 28, 2024, against Heidenheim (2-0), during which he scored. Following this, he was suspended for doping.

Testing positive for meldonium, a substance used to treat angina and heart disease but classified as a doping agent for its ability to enhance cardiac muscle vascularization, Mudryk’s case mirrors that of tennis player Maria Sharapova, who was suspended in 2016 for the same reason. He received a provisional suspension in December 2024, facing up to four years of banishment, potentially lasting until December 2028. However, his suspension could be lifted by January 17, 2026, allowing him to return for the latter part of the season. Currently, the player is awaiting an official decision on his situation.

Sevilla Interested, Strasbourg Watching

Despite his troubles, some clubs are eager to sign him and rejuvenate his career. According to Spanish outlet “La Gran Jugada,” Sevilla FC is keenly interested and has already made inquiries for a potential winter loan. Struggling offensively with only 20 goals in 15 matches, coach Matías Almeyda hopes to add a dynamic and technical edge to his squad. However, this move hinges on Mudryk’s suspension being lifted, Chelsea continuing to pay part of his salary, estimated at around €4.3 million net, and competition from Strasbourg.

Strasbourg, owned by BlueCo, poses a considerable challenge for Sevilla, as the proximity to Chelsea could favor Liam Rosenior’s team. However, Strasbourg is unable to acquire him on loan, having already loaned out Mamadou Sarr, Mike Penders, and Kendry Paez, making this option unviable. Nonetheless, a straight sale or potential swap could keep the door open. Chelsea might be willing to part with Mudryk either permanently or with a buy-back option in exchange for Valentin Barco, who is highly regarded at Stamford Bridge. At this stage, though, this remains speculative until Mudryk’s suspension is resolved.
