Footem.inReal Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano, whose contract is nearing its end.

Top Defender Drawing Interest

Real Madrid had initially shown strong interest in Liverpool‘s Ibrahima Konate, aiming for a Bosman deal next summer.

However, recent reports suggest a shift in priorities, with Dayot Upamecano, another player with an expiring contract, now topping their list.

Upamecano has established himself as one of the best-performing defenders in Germany, a key factor in Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga this season.

PSG’s Pitch to Upamecano

According to MARCA journalist Matteo Moretto, Upamecano is keen on taking the next step in his career.

This ambition has given both Madrid and PSG an opening to approach the French international, hoping to secure him on a free transfer next year.

While Madrid holds an advantage due to its sporting project and international prestige, PSG remains a strong contender for Upamecano’s signature.

PSG’s strength lies in its French identity. They can offer Upamecano the opportunity to return to his home country while still competing for major European titles.

Bayern Munich’s Stance

A significant hurdle for Real Madrid is Bayern Munich’s determination to extend Upamecano’s contract.

The club recently stated that Upamecano is happy in Bavaria, and contract extension talks are ongoing.

Madrid can only hope that the 27-year-old defender doesn’t sign a new deal, allowing them to pursue him in the summer of 2026.

Verbal Agreement in Place?

Previous reports indicated that Madrid had reached a verbal agreement with Upamecano to join them in 2026.

This news could be welcomed by Liverpool, who are keen to retain Ibrahima Konate, a player previously linked with a move to Madrid.

It was believed that Konate was awaiting an offer from Madrid, similar to Trent Alexander-Arnold the previous year.

Madrid initially targeted William Saliba from Arsenal, but the plan fell through when Saliba signed a new contract. Konate then became the primary target before the focus shifted to Upamecano.
