Footem.in – Leverkusen delivered a stunning performance in the Bundesliga, dismantling Heidenheim in a display reminiscent of Xabi Alonso’s golden era.
Following a summer of significant squad changes, Leverkusen appears to be a well-oiled machine. Four new signings were immediately placed in the starting lineup, with two others coming off the bench, all contributing to a decisive 6-0 victory against the last-placed team. Patrik Schick’s early goal in the second minute set the stage for a series of attacks, leading to five goals in the first 45 minutes.
This showing highlighted the strength of Leverkusen’s revamped attack, particularly Ernest Poku. The 21-year-old scored one goal and provided one assist before halftime, bringing his Bundesliga total to four goals and two assists in nine games since his arrival from AZ Alkmaar. His speed and agility were a constant challenge for the opposition’s defense.
However, the real star of the match was Ibrahim Maza, a young player whose integration wasn’t as smooth as others. The 19-year-old midfielder temporarily lost his starting position after two games under Erik ten Hag and often appeared as a substitute under Kasper Hjulmand. His decisive goal in the DFB Cup against Paderborn marked a turning point, restoring his confidence.
His improved performance continued: a solid appearance as a substitute against Bayern Munich, followed by a full game at Benfica in the UEFA Champions League. The peak came against Heidenheim, where he scored his first two Bundesliga goals.
Paired with Aleix García, Maza showed excellent game reading and courage in possession. He successfully navigated pressure in 77% of situations, the highest on the field, despite being the most frequently pressured player.
After the game, Hjulmand praised him: “He’s a versatile player in the middle, learns quickly, and works very hard.”
Patrik Schick also continued his resurgence after a long injury. His goal against Benfica earlier in the week was followed by two goals in this match—including the opening goal that immediately shifted the game’s momentum. His second goal put Leverkusen ahead 3-0, extinguishing Heidenheim’s hopes of a comeback.
This convincing victory moved Leverkusen to fourth place in the league standings, closing in on RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, who both stumbled. The six goals scored also make Leverkusen the second-highest scoring team in the Bundesliga after Bayern, and they have the second-best goal difference with +10.
The performance revives memories of Xabi Alonso’s team that won the 2023/24 Meisterschale in dominant fashion. While it’s early to assess this season’s prospects, the hope for Leverkusen’s resurgence feels very real again.
