Kompany’s Biggest Fear: Is Bayern Munich Too Reliant on One Star?

Footem.in – Vincent Kompany faces a significant challenge at Bayern Munich this season. Despite the team’s strong position atop the Bundesliga and their impressive Champions League performance, Bayern’s fate appears heavily reliant on one key player: Harry Kane.

The English striker has been exceptional, scoring 13 goals in 10 Bundesliga matches and 5 goals in 4 Champions League games. However, if Kane were to be sidelined due to injury, the situation could drastically change for the defending champions.

Kompany is fortunate to be managing Bayern after his relegation from the Premier League with Burnley. Such an opportunity would be almost impossible for another manager like Scott Parker if Burnley were to be relegated again. However, Kompany’s background as a successful former Manchester City captain, who won several Premier League titles, adds value, making Bayern willing to take a chance on him.

The decision has proven wise; Kompany led Bayern to win the Bundesliga last season, giving Harry Kane his first trophy after a long trophy-less spell with Tottenham Hotspur.

However, amidst all the success, a major concern arises: Bayern’s dependence on Kane.

Currently, Bayern practically only has Nicolas Jackson as an alternative in the forward line. The striker, on loan from Chelsea, has only scored one goal in the Bundesliga, far from the expectations of a club like Bayern. If Kane is sidelined due to injury, Kompany could lose the main weapon supporting his team’s performance.

Indeed, Bayern still has creative players like Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise, who regularly contribute goals and assists. However, none of them has the explosiveness and consistency of Kane.

Making matters worse, Thomas Müller—a club legend who was often a solution in difficult times—has now moved to Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS.

With RB Leipzig just six points behind and Borussia Dortmund still potentially a threat, Bayern can’t afford to feel secure. Even Bayer Leverkusen has proven in recent seasons that Bayern’s dominance can be shaken.

Therefore, Kompany should consider signing a new striker in the January transfer window to maintain the team’s balance.

On the other hand, Kane’s future is also a question mark. The 32-year-old striker is known for his discipline in maintaining his fitness, but time cannot be denied. Bayern needs to start thinking about a successor to continue the legacy of Kane and previously Robert Lewandowski.

Kane is still often linked with a possible return to the Premier League, considering he is only 47 goals away from Alan Shearer’s record as the all-time top scorer in the league.

Moreover, Tottenham Hotspur has now changed—the club finally won the Europa League last season, and with Daniel Levy’s departure from the chairman’s seat, significant investments could flow in again.
