Toni Kroos is never shy to express his views. Recently, the German midfielder shared his understanding of Vinicius Junior’s anger and frustration following a match during the Clasico. On Wednesday, he spoke about Barcelona in his podcast Einfach mal luppen. “I have always regarded Iñigo Martínez (now at Al-Nassr) as crucial. Among all the Barcelona center-backs last season, he stood out in transitioning from defense to attack. While he might not be the fastest, his ability to recover the ball and distribute it was impressive. During matches against Real Madrid, his absence was noticeable, especially with Madrid’s pressing. They haven’t replaced him, and that gap is heavily felt.”
Kroos also criticized a Barcelona player, stating, “In central defense, I don’t understand why Eric Garcia played. Technically, he’s slightly better than Araújo, but Araújo has the physicality to pressure rivals more effectively, especially when defending high up the pitch. He would have been ideal for this style of play and opponent. Honestly, I don’t get it. Against players like Mbappé and Vinícius, you need someone quick enough to keep up. Araújo could do that. His absence surprised me a lot.” He believes that Hansi Flick made a mistake in favoring Eric Garcia, who did not impress Kroos.
