Top 5 Players FC Barcelona is Eyeing to Strengthen Their Defense

FC Barcelona is having a challenging season. After nearly perfect performance in 2024/2025, Hansi Flick’s team is struggling this time. The Catalans have several defensive issues, with a notably fragile backline. Opponents are exploiting this high defensive line, and players like Jules Koundé and Pau Cubarsi are not performing at their best. Adding to the troubles is the departure of Íñigo Martínez to Saudi Arabia, which was not replaced by the management.

Statistics highlight the problem: Barcelona has the second-worst defense among the top 12 teams in La Liga, conceding 15 goals in 12 matches. Only Sevilla FC has a poorer record with 19 goals against them. Fortunately, the attacking lineup, although slightly less effective than last year, is still performing relatively well. However, management recognizes that changes are necessary.

Key Players in Focus

While fans are keenly interested in finding a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, securing a central defender is considered equally, if not more, crucial. Deco and his team have prioritized this position, and the top candidate is Nico Schlotterbeck. The German defender from Borussia Dortmund is favored by management and his contract, which expires in 2027, is approaching its end.

Gonçalo Inácio, the Portuguese player from Sporting CP, is also on the list, as he shares a similar contract situation with Schlotterbeck. English defender Marc Guéhi, who will be available in June, is another option but his salary demands might be too high, especially with interest from other top English clubs. Additionally, Dayot Upamecano is mentioned as a potential target, though Madrid seems to be ahead in that pursuit. Lastly, the young talent Tylel Tati from Nantes (17 years old) is viewed as an excellent long-term prospect.
