Tottenham’s midfield issues continue to affect the club’s progress under Thomas Frank this season.

Tottenham has fallen into the lower part of the Premier League table after a streak of poor performance, putting Thomas Frank’s position at 13th place in the standings at risk. With only 22 points from 17 matches, recent losses to Nottingham Forest and Liverpool highlight significant problems within the team that need addressing during the next transfer window.

The primary concern is the need for a dependable holding midfielder for the second half of the season. Spurs must enhance their midfield this winter if they aim to catch up with their rivals in the coming months.

This season, Tottenham has often struggled in midfield. Frank’s choice to leave João Palhinha out of the starting lineup has left the defense vulnerable, particularly during counter-attacks. The team noticeably requires a player to support Palhinha and control the game from a deeper position.

Competition for Al-Hilal star Ruben Neves

Tottenham is actively seeking a long-term solution for its midfield challenges. The team is aiming for a holding midfielder in the upcoming transfer window to build on last season’s Europa League success. With Yves Bissouma potentially leaving in January and Palhinha aging, this area needs urgent attention.

Recent reports indicate an interest in Al Hilal midfielder Rúben Neves. The Portuguese player is looking to return to Europe after turning down a new contract with his current club and is eager to play in one of Europe’s top leagues, making a January move likely if the right offer comes up.

However, signing the 28-year-old may not be easy for Spurs. According to Fichajes, Real Madrid is also watching Neves’ situation as they prepare for the January window. The club wants to strengthen their midfield and may consider a reasonable deal with Al Hilal for the experienced player.

A smart move for Tottenham?

Neves’ contract with Al Hilal ends next summer, and he has shown no intention of extending his stay in Saudi Arabia. Consequently, the Saudi Pro League club is reportedly ready to sell Neves in January, potentially lowering their asking price to around €20m to recover part of the fee they paid to Wolves in 2023.

Bringing in a midfielder of Neves’ caliber would greatly benefit Spurs during the latter half of the season. With Pape Matar Sarr heading to AFCON and João Palhinha struggling for consistent starts, the 28-year-old would be an excellent option to bolster Thomas Frank’s midfield. It’s uncertain whether Tottenham will act quickly to secure his signature, as he seems likely to leave Saudi Arabia soon.
