Alfie Whiteman, former Tottenham goalkeeper, has chosen to retire from professional football at just 27 years old to pursue a career in photography and film. A product of the London club’s academy and part of last year’s Europa League-winning squad, he expressed that he quickly felt the burden of the stereotypical footballer lifestyle: “golf, Gucci bags, cars… we become a reflection of our environment,” he told The Athletic. After spending some time on loan in Sweden and making only one appearance for the first team, Whiteman has decided to find happiness outside of professional football.
“Alfie Whiteman has retired to start a new career as a director and photographer. We wish you all the best, Alfie!”, said Spurs on Friday. Currently, Whiteman works as a photographer with the production company Somesuch, collaborating with brands like Nike and artists such as Central Cee, while traveling around the globe. He also shared that he hasn’t watched a single football match since his retirement and describes himself as a multidisciplinary artist exploring photography, filmmaking, and music.
