Tottenham Hotspur officially extends Cristian Romero’s contract

We are delighted to announce that Cristian Romero has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that their star centre-back, Cristian Romero, has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The announcement was made on the club’s official website on Monday 18 August 2025 and the contract is valid for four years until 2029.

“We are delighted to announce that Cristian Romero has signed a new long-term contract with the club,” read the statement.

Romero, also known as “Cuti”, first joined Tottenham on loan from Serie A club Atalanta in August 2021.

A year later, the Argentinian international was officially signed by Spurs.

Since then, Romero has become a key player in the club’s defence, making 126 appearances and scoring eight goals to date.

During the 2023/24 season, he delivered a brilliant performance, featuring in 33 Premier League matches and scoring five goals. He was also nominated for the Player of the Month award in October 2023.

He also played a pivotal role in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph last season, being named Man of the Match in the final and earning a place in the 2024/25 Europa League Team of the Year alongside teammates Guglielmo Vicario, Pedro Porro, and Dominic Solanke.

Ahead of the UEFA Super Cup in early August 2025, Romero was recently appointed club captain by new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, replacing Son Heung-min who moved to Los Angeles FC.

He had previously served as vice-captain alongside James Maddison since August 2023.

At international level, the 27-year-old has made 44 appearances for Argentina, scoring three goals.

He played a pivotal role in Argentina’s victories in the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

This new contract will be welcomed by Tottenham fans, especially given the speculation surrounding Romero’s future and the interest from clubs such as Atlético Madrid.

As captain, Romero is expected to provide the leadership and consistent performances on the pitch that will be vital for Spurs’ success in the Premier League, Champions League and other competitions in the 2025/26 season.
