West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta is a target for Tottenham.

Despite adding several talented players during the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur continues to struggle with creating scoring opportunities and consistent goal-scoring.

The team has shown a lack of creativity in midfield, often unable to move the ball effectively against tightly organized defenses. The injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have significantly impacted the team’s ability to create chances. With summer signing Xavi Simons not meeting expectations, Mohammed Kudus has had to shoulder much of the creative burden.

Now, Kudus is facing a spell on the sidelines due to a thigh injury sustained against Sunderland, which may further limit Tottenham’s effectiveness in attacking. This situation emphasizes the challenges that manager Thomas Frank needs to address for the team to close the gap with their rivals.

Ben Jacobs reports Tottenham’s interest in Lucas Paqueta

Tottenham is looking for creative midfield options in the upcoming January transfer window to enhance their attacking play. The injury to Kudus has highlighted the urgent need for an additional creative player in Frank’s squad.

The north London club is evaluating players who might be available for transfer, despite Frank acknowledging that winter signings can be challenging. Recently, one familiar name has surfaced in the discussions.

According to recent reports, Tottenham is contemplating a bid for West Ham United’s playmaker Lucas Paqueta. West Ham is open to selling him at the right price, although Spurs have not yet made an official offer.

Paqueta has been an important player for West Ham since his arrival from Lyon in summer 2022. However, the team’s struggles this season have raised questions about the futures of several players, including the Brazilian, whose contract runs until 2027 (Transfermarkt).

Journalist Ben Jacobs has provided an update, noting that while Tottenham is interested in Paqueta, a move in the summer seems more likely than a January transfer.

“Paqueta. Yes. More business with West Ham. It’s like buses, isn’t it? You don’t do barely any deals since Scott Parker and then Kudus arrives and Paqueta is on the radar as well,” Jacobs mentioned on The Last Word On Spurs podcast.

Should West Ham face relegation, Tottenham might have better chances to secure Paqueta in the summer:

“So, I’d keep an eye on that one in the summer, and obviously if West Ham go down they’re not going to keep hold of Lucas Paqueta.”

Paqueta to Tottenham seems logical

Signing Paqueta would address Tottenham’s need for creativity in midfield. The team has struggled with composure and flair, and adding a player of Paqueta’s caliber would be beneficial.

However, following the sale of Kudus last summer, West Ham faced criticism from their supporters. The Hammers might be hesitant to make another notable sale during their fight against relegation. Yet, if relegation occurs, West Ham might have to sell Paqueta, presenting an opportunity for Tottenham in the summer.
