Atlético Madrid will be missing Julián Álvarez for their Champions League match against Liverpool on Wednesday, as reported by Olé. The Argentine forward raised concerns last weekend when he did not return for the second half against Villarreal and was later seen with tape on his right knee.

The club confirmed he won’t travel due to “the discomfort that caused him to leave the field in the match against Villarreal.” Medical staff diagnosed a mild strain, and while Álvarez trained separately hoping to be fit, coach Diego Simeone chose not to take any risks. “We hope it’s nothing serious, and he can return soon,” Simeone stated after the league match.

The injury occurred early in the game when Álvarez assisted Pablo Barrios for Atlético’s first goal. Despite the issue, he played the entire first half.

Álvarez’s absence adds to an increasing injury list, including Thiago Almada, who returned injured from international duty with Argentina, Johnny Cardoso (ankle sprain), Álex Baena, and José María Giménez.

On a positive note, David Hancko, who was doubtful due to an ankle issue, is in the squad. Both Robin Le Normand and Nico González have also recovered and are available.

Atlético has already traveled to Liverpool for their 2025/26 Champions League debut, set for Wednesday at 4 p.m., facing the match with key players missing, putting additional pressure on their coach.
