Igor Tudor stated that his decision to substitute Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was essential after the goalkeeper made significant errors against Atletico Madrid.

Kinsky was replaced just 17 minutes into his Champions League debut, with Spurs already down 3-0. The Czech goalkeeper slipped, allowing Atletico to score first, and later made a serious mistake that led to a third goal by Julian Alvarez.

Tudor took the unusual step of substituting Kinsky immediately after the errors, bringing on Guglielmo Vicario. Kinsky was visibly upset as he left the pitch, but Tudor defended his choice, saying it was necessary to protect both the player and the team.

Following Vicario’s introduction, Spurs conceded a fourth goal just five minutes later, resulting in a final score of 5-2. This puts their Champions League hopes in jeopardy ahead of the next match in North London.

During the post-match press conference, Tudor remarked, “This situation is rare. In my 15 years of coaching, I don’t usually do this. It was required to protect the player and the team. It’s an incredible situation.

“Before the match, it seemed like the right decision, especially considering the pressure Vicario was under. Tony [Kinsky] is a talented goalkeeper. It was the right call. It’s easy to question the decision afterward.

“I spoke with Tony later and told him he’s a great goalkeeper. Unfortunately, big mistakes happen in crucial games. After such a start, it was too much for us, especially when we are vulnerable.”
