La Liga’s plan to hold the Villarreal vs Barcelona match in Miami this December has faced obstacles. UEFA’s Executive Committee has not approved the move and stated that a final decision will only come after discussions with all parties involved, according to AS.
UEFA’s official statement highlighted that it is reviewing requests from both La Liga and the RFEF, as well as a similar request from the FIGC to play the Como vs Milan match in Australia. The governing body of European football noted that the idea of holding domestic league matches outside Europe is becoming more popular, but requires careful consideration.
Currently, the project is on hold. Besides UEFA’s approval, it also needs FIFA’s support. Although new rules set to take effect in 2024 permit FIFA to approve domestic matches held overseas, La Liga’s proposal continues to spark debate.
