Since the end of August, UEFA has announced that the Champions League final will start at 18:00 instead of 21:00. What prompted this change? UEFA’s marketing director, Guy-Laurent Epstein, provided an explanation.
“This change is for the fans attending the match. Everyone travels to the venue. In some countries, finishing at 23:00 or midnight if the match goes into extra time made it difficult for fans to get home or back to their hotel. By moving it to 18:00, it also becomes more appealing for broadcast audiences in the Middle East and Asia. I can imagine some TV channels may not be pleased, but in the end, the product is so strong that success is guaranteed,” he said in an interview with L’Équipe.
