Enzo Maresca has been dismissed as Chelsea head coach after 18 months at Stamford Bridge. The club has announced that they have “parted company”.

This decision follows a rapid decline in the relationship between the manager and the club’s leadership over the last month.

The situation escalated, coming to light during a time when the Italian coach was enjoying some success.

Chelsea finished November with a strong 3-0 win against Barcelona and earned a commendable draw against Arsenal despite being a player down.

However, the team failed to secure a win in their next three matches. After a victory over Everton on December 13, Maresca shared that the preceding 48 hours had been the “worst” of his tenure, citing a lack of support without further explanation.

The root of the issues has reportedly been developing for some time, with various reports highlighting internal struggles.

Reasons Behind Chelsea’s Decision to Sack Enzo Maresca

The primary reason is performance. Results are critical for football managers, and Maresca had overseen a disappointing streak, winning only one of the last seven Premier League games. Chelsea quickly fell from title contenders to fifth place, trailing leaders Arsenal by 15 points.

If he had led Chelsea to success over the festive period, it’s possible that these issues might have been overlooked.

The breaking point seems to stem from Manchester City’s interest in Maresca as a potential future replacement for Pep Guardiola. While Maresca dismissed these rumors as speculation, he reportedly did engage in discussions with City about a possible future role.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Maresca had conversations with City on three occasions, twice in late October and once in mid-December. He informed Chelsea about these discussions, as required by his contract.

Interestingly, the two teams are set to meet in the Premier League this weekend.

Another concern raised by multiple reporters involves the medical department. There have been disagreements regarding return-to-play protocols for injured players, with Chelsea’s independent medical team having the final say on player participation, contrary to the club’s previous expectations of managerial authority in this area.
