Universidad de Chile will not have veteran midfielder Marcelo Díaz for the crucial second leg against Alianza Lima in the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals, as reported by Infobae. The 38-year-old sustained a hamstring tear in the first leg in Lima and had to leave the field early in the second half. Medical assessments have confirmed he will not be fit for Thursday’s match in Coquimbo, which is a significant challenge for coach Gustavo Álvarez.

In his place, Uruguayan midfielder Sebastián “Bigote” Rodríguez is likely to step in. The 33-year-old, who has played for Alianza Lima in the past, replaced Díaz during the first leg and has been a regular for Universidad de Chile since joining this year. Another option for Álvarez is Israel Poblete, his usual choice in central midfield. The 30-year-old was sidelined during the Lima game due to a muscle issue but could be back, having made 33 appearances this season with three goals and one assist.

The tie is still open after a goalless draw in Matute, but both teams have notable challenges. Alianza Lima’s captain Carlos Zambrano will miss the match due to a red card, leaving coach Néstor Gorosito short-handed in defense. Gianfranco Chávez, who recently joined from Sporting Cristal, is the top choice to partner Renzo Garcés, while Pedro Aquino may be moved to strengthen the midfield after showing promise when he came on as a substitute in the first leg.

The second leg will take place at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso Stadium in Coquimbo without fans present. Universidad de Chile will need to rely on their tactical discipline and individual skills to overcome the Peruvian side. A victory would be a notable achievement for either club in a tournament that is gaining importance throughout South America.
