Universitario will not renew Diego Churín’s contract, as reported by journalist Gustavo Peralta on L1 MAX. The 35-year-old Argentine striker will leave the club when his deal ends in December after a year that didn’t meet expectations for a foreign signing.
Churín played 23 official matches in 2024, scoring just four goals and providing no assists. These stats were considered inadequate for a forward of his experience. His best moment came during a 2-0 win over Sporting Cristal at Estadio Monumental, but such standout performances were few and didn’t earn him a regular spot with coach Jorge Fossati.
The Peruvian champions are already planning for 2026, leaving out several underperforming players from their future projects. Churín’s struggle to adapt and the lack of consistent scoring contributed to this decision. Universitario is now looking for a striker who can lead their attack in both domestic and international matches.
In other news, André Carrillo addressed speculation about potentially joining Universitario. In an interview with Ovación, he mentioned a brief chat with club administrator Jean Ferrari but clarified that no formal offer was made. He indicated that his main focus is on signing with Corinthians after his stint in Saudi Arabia.
With Churín leaving and Carrillo not joining, Universitario must work on revamping its attack ahead of the new season, where expectations will remain high.
