Defending World Cup champion Argentina benefited from Bolivia’s goalless draw against Uruguay in matchday 14 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the Latin American zone on Wednesday (26/3).
Uruguay held hosts Bolivia to a 0-0 draw at the Estadio Municipal de El Alto, El Alto.
Argentina became the fourth country to be officially confirmed for the 2026 World Cup, joining hosts USA, Mexico and Canada. Before Argentina, three other teams had already qualified for the 2026 World Cup. Japan, New Zealand and Iran.
As reported by Reuters, Argentina qualified because their points up to matchday 13 (28 points) guaranteed them a top six finish in the Latin American zone.
For the 2026 World Cup, teams ranked first through sixth in the Latin American zone will automatically qualify, while seventh place will have to play-off against a representative from another continent.
Argentina’s points are impossible to catch up with Bolivia who has only collected 14 points and is sitting in seventh position. If Bolivia always wins in the last four matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the Latin American zone, their maximum points are only 26 points.
The certainty of appearing in the 2026 World Cup is Argentina’s 19th participation. Argentina’s best achievement is becoming champions three times. Namely in the 1978, 1986, and 2022 editions.
