The US men’s national team finished the September international window with a 2-0 win against Japan at Lower.com Field in Columbus, as reported by MLSsoccer. This victory followed a disappointing 3-0 defeat to South Korea and comes nine months before the US hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino made five changes to the starting team, including Alex Zendejas and Folarin Balogun. The first goal arrived in the 30th minute when Zendejas volleyed in a cross from Columbus winger Max Arfsten. This marked his first international goal since rejoining the squad.

Japan had chances to equalize before halftime, but Junya Ito and Yuito Suzuki were denied by New York City FC goalkeeper Matt Freese. After halftime, the US gained more control of the game. In the 64th minute, Christian Pulisic sent a pass into the box for Balogun, who scored to increase the lead.

The score could have been higher if Jack McGlynn’s long-range shot hadn’t hit the post in the final minutes. Nevertheless, the “Dos a Cero” tradition in Columbus continued, boosting the team’s confidence ahead of the October friendlies.

The USMNT will next play Ecuador on October 10 in another international match.
