Manchester City has signed U.S. women’s national team midfielder Sam Coffey until June 29, as announced by the English club on Wednesday.
According to ESPN, the transfer fee is $875,000.
Coffey joins from the Portland Thorns, where she achieved a spot on the National Women’s Soccer League’s Best XI in three out of the last four seasons and was part of the Thorns’ NWSL championship team in 2022.
She also contributed to the 2024 national team that won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics, having earned 42 caps for the U.S. team.
In 2025 with the Thorns, she scored two goals and provided four assists in 27 matches. The team was knocked out in the semifinal round of the playoffs.
Now 27, Coffey shared her thoughts about her first experience playing overseas on Wednesday.
“Manchester is new to me, but I felt a strong pull toward it,” she said. “The investment in women’s soccer here is evident, and I’m excited to be part of this movement.”
“The facilities, team support, and efforts for women’s soccer are impressive, and I feel honored to be involved.”
Currently, Manchester City leads the Women’s Super League with a six-point margin.
“Sam’s reputation as one of the best globally speaks for itself, and we’re thrilled she chose to join us,” said Therese Sjogran, Manchester City’s director of football.
“We believe she has the skills needed to succeed at City and in the WSL, and we look forward to seeing how she improves our already strong squad.”
