Wayne Rooney Open to Joining Michael Carrick, Not Begging for Coaching Role
Wayne Rooney shared his thoughts during his BBC show, The Wayne Rooney Show, after Michael Carrick’s name was mentioned for a coaching position following Ruben Amorim’s departure last week.
Rooney believes Carrick’s ties to the club make him a suitable choice for the role, even temporarily.
“Of course I would,” Rooney said. “It’s a no-brainer. I’m not begging for a job here. Just to be clear, if I was asked to come in, I would. Appointing the manager is the most important thing.”
“I think it would fit together really well,” he added. “Michael loves the football club and would like to contribute if he can. He lives and breathes that club — that’s what it needs.”
Carrick, who previously served as a coach under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, had a short stint as United’s caretaker manager in 2021.
During his time, he achieved a Champions League win against Villarreal and a Premier League victory over Arsenal before moving to Middlesbrough. He managed Boro for two and a half years before leaving in June 2025.
Wayne Rooney’s Coaching Aspirations
Since retiring in 2021, Rooney has taken on several managerial roles, including positions at Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City, and Plymouth Argyle.
This marks the first time he has publicly considered returning to United in a coaching capacity. United, currently seventh in the Premier League, is expected to announce Carrick’s appointment soon.
There’s been no confirmation about Rooney potentially joining Carrick’s coaching staff at this time.
If it happens, it would reunite two key members from the club’s last title-winning team under Sir Alex Ferguson, paving the way for Rooney’s anticipated return.
