Wayne Rooney is a legendary figure at Manchester United and is reportedly considering a return to management.
He joined Old Trafford in 2004 and became one of the club’s best players. By the time he left for Everton in 2017, he was the highest goalscorer in the club’s history, with 253 goals in 559 matches over 13 years.
After retiring, Rooney began coaching and managed Derby County, D.C. United, Birmingham City, and Plymouth Argyle.
Even after playing under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, Rooney has not matched his former manager’s success.
His unsatisfactory performance at Plymouth led to his departure, and he then transitioned to a pundit role.
In early 2025, he joined Match of the Day as a pundit and is said to be earning £400,000 annually.
Recently, The Sun reported that he is willing to return to management despite his challenging 25-match tenure at Plymouth.
A source mentioned, “Wayne enjoys his television work, but he wants to get back into management. He will be open to opportunities.”
Rooney prefers a role in the Championship or League One, rather than the Premier League.
During his managerial career, he oversaw Derby’s relegation to League One in 2022 and resigned shortly after.
He then moved to D.C. United but left at the season’s end, followed by a brief and challenging stint in Birmingham between October 2023 and January 2024.
Plymouth appointed him, but he lasted just 25 matches before leaving at the end of 2024.
Now, questions arise about whether it’s the right time for him to shift from punditry back to managing a team.
