Wayne Rooney expressed concerns early on about Alexander Isak’s readiness.

The former Manchester United player raised doubts about Isak’s fitness right after his £125m transfer to Liverpool, and the initial signs have not been encouraging.

Isak joined Liverpool with high expectations. The team hoped his speed, movement, and finishing ability, which he showcased at Newcastle, would improve their attack.

However, he has appeared to lack confidence and has struggled to fit into a team still adjusting to new tactics.

Wayne Rooney’s Early Warning about Alexander Isak

Rooney discussed Isak’s situation on the BBC’s Football Daily podcast before it gained wider attention.

His remarks were based on experience, highlighting the impact of poor fitness at the elite level.

“I wouldn’t play Isak; he hasn’t looked ready since moving from Newcastle. He hasn’t trained or had a pre-season. That’s crucial,” the former United star noted in October 2025.

He also mentioned, “Without a pre-season, it’s tough. He might have trained alone, but he’s paying for it. Based on his performance, he doesn’t deserve to be ahead of Ekitike.”

This concern about Isak’s lack of a pre-season has become increasingly relevant. His pressing, decision-making, and movement seem to be behind, as reflected in his stats.

He has yet to score from open play and often appears out of sync with teammates.

The Numbers Support Rooney’s Concerns about Alexander Isak

So far, Isak has scored just one goal in the Premier League. Given the £125m price tag, it’s a slow start.

While his expected goals indicate missed chances, he hasn’t brought the confidence he had at Newcastle to Liverpool.

The team’s formation has also shifted, with Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo alternating up front. Isak’s tendency to drift wide or drop deep hasn’t aligned with the new manager’s style, leaving him unsure of his role.

At this point, Rooney’s comments seem more like insight than criticism. He identified a player still catching up both physically and mentally.

If Isak can’t improve soon, the scrutiny regarding his hefty transfer fee will likely intensify.
