A senior spokesperson for the West Ham board has stated the club regrets not pursuing a deal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin last summer.
West Ham was interested in signing Calvert-Lewin after his contract with Everton ended. The 28-year-old ultimately joined newly-promoted Leeds United and has emerged as one of the Premier League’s top signings this season.
Calvert-Lewin has netted 10 goals in the Premier League this season, making him the highest-scoring English player in the league.
After opting against signing Calvert-Lewin, West Ham acquired Callum Wilson on a free transfer. Wilson has made just nine league starts, while the club also invested £47 million in forwards Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe in January.
West Ham currently sits 18th in the Premier League, just two points from safety, and is fighting against relegation.
A club insider mentioned that the decision not to sign a striker last summer was made by former manager Graham Potter.
In comments to HammersDotNews, an unnamed board spokesperson said: “We regret not signing Calvert-Lewin, especially on a free transfer. Mr. Potter didn’t want a forward and would not allow us to sign one. Nuno came in and identified the need for two strikers, which has helped immensely.”
