What happens if the USA win, tie or lose vs Guatemala today at the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup semifinals?

The USA face Guatemala in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup semifinals with a spot in the championship match on the line.

As the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup nears its conclusion, the U.S. Men’s National Team will take on Guatemala in the tournament’s semifinals in what promises to be a high-stakes matchup. With a trip to the final at stake, Mauricio Pochettino’s squad looks to stay unbeaten, while Luis Fernando Tena’s side hopes to pull off a major upset.

The USMNT enter the game as the clear favorite but have already faced serious challenges en route to the final four, including a penalty shootout win over Costa Rica following a 2-2 draw in regulation.

Guatemala, on the other hand, advanced past Canada in a similar fashion, winning on penalties after a 1-1 result in regulation time. Despite not featuring standout stars, Tena’s group has earned its place in the semifinals with a disciplined and cohesive team effort.

What happens if the USA beat Guatemala?

If the USA defeat Guatemala, Pochettino’s side will punch its ticket to the Gold Cup final, where they’ll face the winner of the other semifinal between Mexico and Honduras. A victory would give the U.S. a shot at claiming its eighth Concacaf Gold Cup title.

What happens if the USA and Guatemala tie?

If the match between the USA and Guatemala ends in a draw after 90 minutes, the outcome will be decided by a penalty shootout. Extra time—consisting of two 15-minute periods—is reserved only for the final match of the tournament.

What happens if the USA lose to Guatemala?

If Guatemala pull off the upset, Tena’s squad will advance to the Gold Cup final for the first time in 56 years. A win would give Guatemala the opportunity to secure just their second Gold Cup title in the nation’s history.
