The Vancouver Whitecaps have re-signed goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka through June 2027.
Takaoka, 29, was named an MLS All-Star and was a finalist for Goalkeeper of the Year in 2025, achieving a league-best 13 clean sheets.
Since joining from Yokohama F. Marinos in 2023, he has made 129 appearances and kept 35 clean sheets across all competitions.
“Yohei has become a vital part of our team since he joined in 2023, proving himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the league,” said sporting director Axel Schuster. “He is not only a great player but also a true professional with excellent character. We are excited to have him back.”
Takaoka has played a key role in helping Vancouver secure three consecutive Canadian Championships. In 2025, the team reached both the MLS Cup final and the Concacaf Champions Cup final.
“I’ve felt the club’s support from day one, and I’m eager to get back on the field,” Takaoka said. “I look forward to seeing everyone at BC Place. Our best season is ahead, and we aim to win every title next year.”
On Wednesday, the Whitecaps also announced the signing of homegrown defender Mihail Gherasimencov through the 2027-28 season, with an option for 2028-29.
The 20-year-old Moldova international scored two goals and provided four assists in 30 matches during his loan with Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League in 2025.
