Who Can Step In for Malick Fofana?

In a season where many expected Olympique Lyonnais to struggle, manager Paulo Fonseca and his team have defied the odds. Due to restrictions from the DNCG and a tumultuous summer that raised fears of relegation to Ligue 2, they have managed to secure fourth place in Ligue 1, just two points behind PSG. Recently, they celebrated a 2-1 victory against Strasbourg. However, this success came at a cost, as their star player, Malick Fofana, was forced to leave the field on a stretcher.

Several Options for Replacement

On Monday, OL confirmed that Fofana suffered a *"severe sprain of the right ankle, accompanied by injuries that will likely require surgery, sidelining him for several months."* This announcement means Fonseca will have to adjust his strategy without his key offensive asset for at least three months. What are the potential solutions to fill the gap left by a player who has started in 11 of the 12 matches so far this season? There are a few options available on paper.

Against Salzburg in the Europa League, Fonseca opted to rest Fofana, placing Pavel Sulc on the left wing while using young Carvalho in midfield. Another possibility is to rely on Afonso Moreira, who scored heroically against RCSA last Sunday. This option seems likely as they prepare to face Paris FC on Wednesday. Other alternatives include moving Adam Karabec to the left and Rachid Ghezzal to the right, a combination Fonseca has tested mid-game, although it remains uncertain if Ghezzal can manage to start consistently.

OL Can Sign a Medical Joker

Fonseca is unlikely to change his successful 4-2-3-1 formation, but young talents could also seize their chance. Alejandro Gomes Rodriguez, a 17-year-old forward, impressed during pre-season but quickly faded in the lineup, similar to Enzo Molebe, who has already made appearances in attack. While these options are somewhat limited, OL has a regulatory opportunity to bring in a replacement under specific conditions.

Indeed, Lyon can still utilize a medical joker for injuries lasting three months or longer, which applies to Fofana’s situation. Hans Hateboer was registered as a standard joker, allowing for the recruitment of a player based in France. This is a viable path for Olympique Lyonnais, provided they adhere to financial regulations. They must swiftly identify a solution to fill the void left by their Belgian asset, especially with tough fixtures against Real Betis and Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon.
